These criteria for chemical products apply to all chemicals, irrespective of the products they are found in.

Consequently, within the framework of these criteria it is possible to label everything - from cosmetics to washing powder to degreasing compound. The criteria apply from 1 December 2006.

The Bra Miljöval label for chemical products is intended to decrease the use of hazardous chemicals and, consequently, reduce their environmental impact. The basic approach of the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (SSNC) is that all the chemicals contained in Bra Miljöval labelled chemical products must be easily biodegradable, non-toxic to aquatic organisms and non-bioaccumulable.

Neither must these chemicals be injurious to anyone using the product. Health and allergy risks are minimised through the use of Bra Miljöval labelled chemical products as they apply strict requirements as concerns health impact and the use of allergenics in perfumes. Another requirement is that manufacturers must utilise a minimum of testing on animals.

In order to decrease the overfertilization of the Baltic Sea and other bodies of water, no phosphates are allowed in Bra Miljöval labelled products. Bra Miljöval also requires certain standards concerning dosage, water content, packaging and consumer information.

The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation requires that the companies who wish to use this label undertake environmental activities which include their transport function. One of the aims of this measure is to reduce the environmental footprint of Bra Miljöval labelled products.

Once a year, a careful check is carried out of all the companies who use the Bra Miljöval label. Their business is examined by an authorised public accountant. Occasionally random checks are carried out in order to ensure that their products fulfil the requirements.

The audit is a vital part of the credibility of the Bra Miljöval label. Consequently the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation places great emphasis on ensuring that it is carried out in the agreed manner. The audit is a measure undertaken by licensees in accordance with their agreement with the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation.
