Climate Relay for a powerful climate treaty
As EU president, Sweden has a unique possibility to influence the world’s climate. Many companies and politicians support our cause, a powerful climate treaty in Copenhagen.
In 2007 the UN's climate panel, IPCC, stated that the industrialized countries must decrease their greenhouse gas emissions by 25–40 percent by the year 2020, that the Arctic may entirely lose its ice sheets by the middle of the century, and that global sea levels may rise by 0.2–0.6 meters by the end of this century. New research shows that the situation is even more severe: The Arctic may entirely lose its ice sheets in the 2030's, and global sea levels may rise by as much as 1.5 meters by the year 2100.
We request that:
- the industrialized nations by the year 2020, together reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40 percent from their 1990 levels.
- the industrialized nations substantially strengthen their support for climate investments, in addition to aid, in developing countries.
About the climate relay
The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation has created the Climate Relay, the goal of which is to gather support for a powerful climate treaty in Copenhagen. With the support of companies and municipalities, it will be easier to bridge the gap between policy and research. By taking a proactive leadership role, Sweden and the EU can demonstrate how a climate-smart society, free of fossil fuels, can be achieved with both higher living standards and a healthy economy.
