Technology – curse or promise?

On global visions and risky mega-techno-fix solutions.

Are we trying to ‘solve’ the climate crisis by introducing new technologies that create new global problems on the same scale? How can we ensure that new technologies contribute to real solutions, rather than contribute to the crises – climate, food, environment, health – that we now see converging? What technologies are needed in order to reach fossil-free and equitable societies?

At the seminar, the core findings of a new report that focuses on the risks of ‘geo- engineering’ was presented. This was complemented with a presentation of a vision for a future Europe using 100 % renewable electricity, and discussion on precaution and technology in a development perspective. The seminar discussed what needs to be pursued within the climate negotiations in relation to technology assessment and transfer, and how can Sweden and the EU can take a lead on these issues.
