Our prioritised areas 

SSNC’s work focusing on our atmosphere concerns cleaner air, limited impact on the climate and a non-toxic environment. The atmosphere, the layer of gas regulating earth’s climate and protecting us from harmful radiation, enables all life on our planet. Within our objective related to the atmosphere, SSNC is engaged in several issues that are absolutely crucial to humanity.

Biodiversity and healthy ecosystems represent a prerequisite for addressing the challenges of the future. Our land-based ecosystems are currently facing several threats, such as unsustainable methods in mineral extraction, agriculture and forestry activities. SSNC wants to ensure that such activities are carried out within the limits of nature. We also seek to preserve species and protect important natural areas from exploitation.

The majority of oceans are being fished so severely that the most common species of edible fish are running out. The world’s oceans are being emptied of life and tons upon tons of fish are thrown back into the water either dead or dying. At the same time, millions of people find it difficult to survive when traditional, small-scale fishing is pushed to the side by industrial fishing.   

Within the objective of aquatic ecosystems, we work towards living lakes and rivers, good-quality groundwater, oceans in balance and a living coast and archipelago. But also towards vibrant wetlands, acidification that is exclusively natural, a non-toxic environment and a stop to eutrophication.

We humans are the cause of environmental problems, which is why we also need to create solutions by altering our habits and societies. Simply adopting new technologies and business models is not sufficient, we also need to bring about an inner change of mind and, not least, alter the way we look upon the relationship between humans and nature.   

SSNC seeks to strengthen people’s knowledge and sense of nature. We want to change unsustainable consumption patterns, achieve environmentally sound urban planning and ensure that natural resources are used according to the planet’s limits.

SSNC is the largest and most influential environmental organisation in Sweden. We are a Swedish popular movement and part of the global environmental movement. The fact that we are many members, more than 200,000, gives us legitimacy and strengthens our demands and message. Success in our work is largely linked to the drive and engagement of our members, local associations, county associations and networks.   

SSNC is engaged in advocacy efforts, both locally and nationally, and contributes to strengthening the Swedish environmental debate and having an impact on its content. In addition, we also collaborate with organisations in ten countries on four continents. We strive to be a strong counterforce in the negative trend of the democratic space for civil society shrinking across the world.
