Fast Fashion: From Runway to Rubbish
For the Knowledge Exchange 18th of September, the theme is 'Fashion’s Waste Trail'. This session centres the fast fashion industry and its consequenses. You will hear voices from across the globe share their experiences about the fashion industry and how it destroys people and planet on its way from Runway to Rubbish.

Program and speakers
This Knowledge Exchange will explore sustainable fashion and the growing waste trail created by the way clothing is produced, consumed and discarded. The four speakers will bring different experiences from Zimbabwe, Sweden, South Africa and the Philippines, showing that sustainable fashion can look very different depending on context.
You will hear from:
Sijabuliso Nyathi, Zimbabwe – Reusing local materials and creating livelihoods
Eva Vollmer, Sweden – Sharing, education and consuming less
Lara Taylor, South Africa – Repair, upcycling and community connection
Kweyn Tagaduar, Philippines – Textile waste, responsibility and policy
The session will explore both how we consume less and how we can do more with less. In many parts of the Global North, where consumption levels are high, sustainable fashion can mean buying fewer new clothes, sharing, repairing and making what we already have last longer. In many Global South and developing country contexts, it can also mean making creative use of available materials, finding new value in things that might otherwise be considered waste and creating livelihoods from local resources.
Together, the speakers offer a journey from making use of local resources and creating livelihoods, to consuming less and sharing, repairing and upcycling, and finally looking at the wider systems that determine where textile waste ends up. The session asks not only “How do we reduce fashion waste?”, but also “What can we learn from the different ways communities are already making more sustainable use of clothing and resources?”
