Cabbage white (2052)

Summer plague in agricultural landscapes.

The cabbage white is a butterfly species which has benefited greatly from climate change. Warmer summers and mild winters have enabled them to spread all over Sweden, even in the northern mountainous regions.

The competition it has introduced in certain areas has had a negative effect on local species, and initiatives to limit the spread of the cabbage white have been launched. The massive population boom of cabbage whites has also been somewhat of a plague for the nation’s farmers and is considered a leading culprit in the soaring price of cabbage during the last two decades.

The increased numbers of cabbage whites caused more and more farmers and hobby growers to get involved in the work against climate change. It became a symbol of agricultural vulnerability in a climate-changed world.
